Doubt

Liked this movie... not as great as I was hoping, but still good. Meryl Streep was great, of course, as was Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Also was super impressed with Viola Davis'. Only one real scene, but damn was it a killer.

The Visitor

Am becoming a bigger fan of Richard Jenkins every time I see him in something. What a great piece that reveals the story just a glimpse at a time.

Acting was universally pretty great. Ending was sad but not disastrously so, and what looked like it was going to be a simple movies about a guy being deported turned into something MUCH more.

Jan / Feb movies

We saw:

  • Slumdog Millionaire - really good - A
  • The Invasion - not really good - C-
  • Revolutionary Road - A loved it. Best thing I've seen Leonardo DiCaprio in, though I gotta say it's a HARD movie to watch.

Valkyrie

This is the least sucky thing I've ever seen with Tom Cruise in it. Seriously though, I was pleasantly surprised that he didn't ruin the movie for me - somehow I expected the crazy to just ooze out of his pores, but he was really good.

The whole movie was good, in fact. I love Tom Wilkinson, who is also present, along with Bill Nighy, and Kenneth Brannagh is also in it briefly. The only downside is it's a suspense movie where you already know the ending. That always kind of sucks.

Burn After Reading

Loved, loved, loved it. Seriously. One of the best movies I've seen all year. Brad Pitt and George Clooney both play really out there characters and do it with spot on accuracy. And, the rest of the cast is stellar too - John Malkovich as an ex-spook who intones "What the Fuck" in a Rambo-like fashion throughout most of the movie, Frances McDormand as a trainer desperate to reinvent herself through plastic surgery, and perhaps most sympathetic (to me anyway) Richard Jenkins as McDormand's secretly-in-love-with-her supervisor who ends up making a very poor choice in service to that love.

Not as funny as Big Liebowski, but definitely near the top of my list of Coen brothers faves.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

A surprisingly funny movie from the Superbad guys. There were definitely hysterical moments and I find the one liners in these movies to be killers. Would recommend it if you're in the mood for a comedy.

Sex and the City

Mom has been watching our girls all summer on Sunday and Monday nights - not because we asked her to but because she is crazy in love with them and wants to spend more time with them. A nice additional benefit was us being able to have date night again.

This was our last date night before the summer ended and PB consented to see the SATC movie with me. Yay!!

I liked it a lot mostly because I miss the series. I hate that Charlotte got pregnant, but more than that, I hate that her doctor told her it happens all the time. It. Doesn't. OK????

I also realized that that narration and cheesy puns are funny in 30 minute doses but not in two hours ones.

But the clothes were great and I missed my girls so I really, really enjoyed it.
